Learning Objectives

Indicator: B2.1.1.1.3 - Use number names and non-standard units (marked 10s and 1s) for measuring (lengths and volumes) to count to find out “how long or how much?” up to 999

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. measure the length of classroom objects (tables, desks, windows) using non-standard units such as hand-spans, feet, strides, sticks, and threads, and state the result as a count up to 999.
  2. measure the capacity of containers (buckets, basins, drums) using non-standard units such as cups, bottles, and tins, and state the result as a count up to 999.
  3. group non-standard units into marked groups of 10s and 1s to read and say a total number (for example, 3 groups of 10 and 4 ones, read as “thirty-four”).
  4. use number names correctly when reporting measurements, such as “two hundred and fifty-six hand-spans” or “eighty-three cups of water”.
  5. explain why the number of units changes when a different non-standard unit is used to measure the same object.
