Concept Sketches
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define concept sketch in their own words and distinguish it from a finished drawing or a technical drawing.
- Identify at least four different types of sketches (thumbnail, rough, comprehensive, and rendering) and match each type to its appropriate stage in the design process.
- Explain at least three applications of concept sketches in real-world designing, such as product design, architecture, and fashion.
- List the essential tools and materials used for sketching and state the correct use of each one.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-ability and mixed-gender groups to research, discuss, and present findings on concept sketches to the whole class.

Group Work/Collaborative Learning: In mixed-ability groups present to learner's different types of sketches. Allow learners to observe the sketches and present their findings in a whole class discussion. Problem-based Learning/Experiential Learning: In their groups, assist learners to research and discuss concept sketches, types of sketches, their application in the design process, as well as tools and materials used for sketching. Provide access to the internet, relevant videos and charts Support learners to present their findings in a group presentation. Group Work/Collaborative Learning: In groups, learners use relevant resources such as photographs, videos, drawings and board illustrations to identify and record the various rendering techniques used in designing. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - Reference books - Drawing studio - Access to internet - LCD Projector - Sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
