SHS3 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 1
Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Systems
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.3.LI.1 - Present a summary of on-board surveillance systems.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define on-board surveillance systems and explain their purpose in aerospace vehicles.
- Identify at least five distinct on-board surveillance systems and describe the function of each.
- Categorise on-board surveillance systems according to what they monitor (aircraft status, external environment, or traffic).
- Use labelled illustrations to show how at least three on-board surveillance systems operate.
- Present a concise verbal summary of on-board surveillance systems to the class, responding to peer questions with accurate explanations.

Collaborative Learning: In small mixed ability groups, learners research on on-board aerospace vehicle surveillance systems for class presentations. Talk for Learning: Learners add on to what others say based on the group presentations. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Satellite dish antenna Assessment (3.2.3.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
