Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.3 - Prepare weaves from natural sources and use harmonious colours to create art and design works.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three locally available natural sources of fibres suitable for weaving and explain how to extract and prepare them for use.
  2. Classify natural plant dyes into warm and cool colour groups and pair them into harmonious colour schemes (analogous, complementary or monochromatic).
  3. Prepare a set of natural fibres (strips of raffia, bamboo, palm leaf or grass) by cutting, splitting, soaking and dyeing them using locally available colour sources.
  4. Create a woven art and design work (wall hanging, mat or coaster) that applies a harmonious colour scheme inspired by Ghanaian colour symbolism.
  5. Reflect on their own woven piece and a partner’s piece, describing how the colours work together harmoniously and what symbolism the colours carry in Ghanaian culture.
