SHS1 Agricultural Science · Semester 2, Week 15
Climate Variability
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.2 - Discuss increasing drought, pestilence and decreasing crop yields.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define drought, pestilence, and decreasing crop yields in their own words, giving at least one local example of each.
- Explain the causal chain linking rising temperatures, drought, pestilence, and falling crop yields, using evidence from Ghanaian farming systems.
- Analyse how the combined effects of drought and pestilence threaten food security and rural livelihoods in Ghana, using strategic reasoning to weigh multiple factors.
- Discuss adaptive strategies that Ghanaian farmers can adopt to reduce the impact of drought and pestilence, and evaluate their feasibility in different ecological zones.
- Present a group report on observed or reported effects of drought and pestilence in a Ghanaian farming community, drawing on internet research and personal knowledge.

Enquiry-Based Learning: Learners in small mixed groups surf the internet and read about the topic before the lesson. Talk for Learning: Various groups discuss information generated from reading assignments and present reports. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Video documentaries and pictures on climate change challenges in agriculture - Computer - Smartphone - Notebooks - Functional Internet connectivity - Field notebooks relevant textbooks - Projector Assessment (1.4.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
