JHS3 Science · Term 1, Week 11
Animal Production
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B9.2.4.2.2 - Differentiate between different types of feed for different stages of domestic and commercial animals.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Group domestic and commercial animals into young, growing, and matured stages and give at least one example of each stage.
- Classify feed types (creep feed, grower mash, finisher mash, layers mash, broiler starter, roughage, concentrate) and match each to the correct stage of growth.
- Explain the major function of feed at each growth stage, such as building bones in young stock, developing muscle in growing animals, and maintaining body condition or supporting egg production in matured animals.
- Compare the feeding needs of ruminants, monogastrics, and poultry at the same growth stage, identifying at least one difference in feed type or form.
- Justify why a farmer cannot feed a matured animal the same ration as a young animal, using reasoning based on nutrient needs.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Categorise different types of animals according to their stages of growth (young, growing and matured stages). 2. List the types of feed used for the various stages of growth in their domestic and commercial ruminants, monogastrics and poultry. 3. Compare and construct the major functions of feed in each growth stage of different animals. 4. Discuss types of feed used to feed different domestic and commercial animals at different stages of growth.
