Algebraic Expressions

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.2.2.1.3 - Substitute values to evaluate algebraic expressions including fractions and use these to solve problems.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Substitute given numerical values (including negative integers and fractions) into algebraic expressions to evaluate them.
  2. Simplify algebraic expressions before substitution to make evaluation easier and more accurate.
  3. Evaluate expressions that combine substitution with multiplication and division of fractions, such as products of rational expressions.
  4. Apply substitution of values to solve word problems drawn from everyday situations.
  5. Verify their evaluations by checking that the final value is reasonable given the signs and magnitudes of the substituted values.
