JHS1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 6
Algebraic Expressions
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.2.2.1.3 - Perform multiplication and division of algebraic expressions with rational coefficients.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Multiply algebraic expressions with rational coefficients, including terms with powers (e.g., 4p × 8p², 5xy² × 4x⁴y³).
- Multiply three or more algebraic terms together, including negative coefficients (e.g., -2a × 4c × 5b).
- Write and simplify algebraic expressions for the area of rectangles and squares given their dimensions.
- Divide algebraic expressions with rational coefficients, simplifying the numerical and variable parts separately (e.g., 12x³y² ÷ 16xy⁴).
- Divide algebraic expressions where the denominator is a product of terms, simplifying fully (e.g., -30abc ÷ 6ab³c⁻²).
