Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.1 - Describe the modern and efficient ways of crop irrigation
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain at least four modern methods of crop irrigation (drip, sprinkler, pivot, and subsurface) and describe how each delivers water to vegetable crops and ornamental plants.
- Compare the water-use efficiency of modern irrigation methods with traditional methods such as watering cans, buckets, and rainfall.
- State at least two advantages and two disadvantages of drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation in the Ghanaian context.
- Identify the key components of a drip irrigation system (water source, pump, filter, mainline, drip lines, emitters) and explain the function of each.
- Justify, with reasons, which modern irrigation method would be most suitable for a small-scale vegetable farmer in a water-scarce area.

Talk for Learning: In mixed-gender groups, learners brainstorm on existing methods of supplying water to vegetable crops and ornamental plants (e.g. use of watering cans, buckets, water hose, rainfall, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation).
