B5 Mathematics · Term 3, Week 8
Geometric Reasoning
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.3.4.1.1 - Tell the position and motion of objects in space using the cardinal points north, south, east and west
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and name the four main cardinal points: north, south, east and west.
- Describe the position of an object relative to another object using the cardinal points (e.g. “The tree is to the east of the classroom”).
- Describe the motion of an object from one point to another using directional language and cardinal points.
- Use a simple grid to give and follow directions involving the cardinal points, such as “Move 3 squares east and 2 squares north.”
- Justify their descriptions of position and motion by explaining how they used the cardinal points, showing attention to precision.

Term 3, Week 8
(Week 32 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
E.g. 1. Pupils describe the position and motion of objects from one point to another using the 4 main cardinal points: e.g. The point P is to the west of point T but to the north of the A
E.g. 2. Pupils describe the position of places in a grid from a given location. E.g. from Kofi's house - the school is East of Kofi's house; the hospital is North of Kofi's house E.g. 3. Ask learners to give directions from Kofi's house the various locations. E.g. Move 2 squares to the east and 2 squares to the north to get to the church
The document prints this indicator's code and text run together as "B5.3.4.1.1Tell the position and motion...", with no space, which is why INVENTORY.md misses it. The heading above the table reads "Sub-Strand 3: Geometric Reasoning" although the indicator code makes this sub-strand 3.4.
