Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.3.2.2.1 - Select and justify referents for cm³ or m³ units.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Describe a cubic centimetre (1 cm³) as the volume of a cube measuring 1 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm, and a cubic metre (1 m³) as the volume of a cube measuring 1 m × 1 m × 1 m.
- Identify at least three everyday objects in their classroom or compound that serve as referents for 1 cm³ and at least three referents for 1 m³.
- Select an appropriate unit (cm³ or m³) for measuring the volume of given containers and objects, and justify their choice with a clear reason.
- State the relationship between 1 cm³ and 1 m³, including that 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³ and that 1 cm³ = 1/1,000,000 of 1 m³.
- Work collaboratively in groups to sort objects and containers by the most suitable volume unit, explaining their reasoning to the class.

E.g. 1 Show learners an object which is a cubic centimetre (or 1 cm 3 ) and another object which is a cubic metre (or 1 m 3 ) E.g. 2 Let learners explore the classroom and compound to find that can be used as referents for the cubic centimetre (1cm 3 ) and cubic metre (1m 3 ). Example of 1m 3 is polytank; and 1cm 3 is cube sugar. E.g. 3 Ask learners identify containers in the classroom and compound that can be measured using cubic centimetre (cm 3 ) and cubic metre (m 3 ) E.g. 4 Ask learners to explore and state the relationship between 1cm 3 and 1m 3 ; that is, a cubic is the volume of a cube with measurements 1cm x 1cm x 1cm, and is equal to 1/1,000,000 of a cubic meter, 1/1,000 of a litre (i.e. 1m 3 = 100cm x 100cm x 10cm = 1,000,000cm 3 ).
The cube diagrams and their labels ("10 x 10 x 10 of this cubes is 1m 3", "1 000 cm 3 = 1 L") are set beside E.g. 2 to E.g. 4 and interleave with them in the text layer; the figure shows them. Superscripts are printed as separate characters, so "cm 3" means cubic centimetre.
