Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.3.1.3 - Create a problem for a given equation

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the unknown and the known quantities in a given equation.
  2. Create at least two different real-life stories or problems that match a given equation.
  3. Write a word problem to match a simple one-step equation with whole number coefficients.
  4. Solve a self-created problem to verify that it correctly matches the given equation.
  5. Justify to a partner why the problem they created fits the equation, using the words “unknown” and “equation”.

E.g.1 Ask students to describe two different stories that the equation 5 + k = 9 could represent
E.g.2. Ask learners to solve puzzle in the figure, by solving the equations in each line

The document prints this indicator's code and text run together as "B5.2.3.1.3Create a problem for a given equation", with no space. INVENTORY.md and a tolerant grep of the raw text both miss it for that reason. The content standard cell on this page prints B5.3.2.2 ("Perform a single transformation (translation and reflection) of a 2D shape"), which belongs to the volume/transformation sub-strand, not to equations; the standard code here is taken from the indicator's own code.
