Concept Sketches

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Use basic shapes, forms and rendering techniques in designing.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name at least five basic geometric shapes and three basic forms used in design drawing.
  2. Draw freehand sketches of both organic and inorganic objects using basic shapes and forms as the foundation.
  3. Apply at least two different rendering techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, or tonal shading) to give depth and volume to their sketches.
  4. Differentiate between shape (2D) and form (3D) in their own drawings and in sketches they observe.
  5. Combine basic shapes and rendering techniques to produce a finished freehand concept sketch of a real object.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 2 (Week 2 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Project-based learning: Guide learners individually, to use freehand sketches to draw and render various shapes and forms with one or more of the rendering techniques they are familiar with. Encourage learners to draw both organic and inorganic objects.

Assessment (1.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
