Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.4.LI.1 - Examine ways of managing desert encroachment

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain desert encroachment and identify at least three causes and three effects of the phenomenon in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
  2. Evaluate at least four different strategies for managing desert encroachment, weighing the strengths and limitations of each.
  3. Justify the role of community participation, government policy, and international cooperation in combating desert encroachment, using examples from Ghana and the Sahel.
  4. Apply critical thinking to propose a workable local management plan for a desert-encroachment-prone area in Ghana, considering social, economic and environmental factors.
  5. Demonstrate social awareness and responsible decision-making by respectfully sharing and considering diverse views on vegetation management during group discussion.

Talk for Learning: In an interactive, GESI and different cultural background class discussion, explain the meaning, causes and effects of desert encroachment.
Collaborative learning:
- In the same task group work, explain ways by which desert encroachment can be minimised.
- Learners should be able to manage their emotional reactions and behaviours using techniques such as mindfulness strategies, breathing, and self-talk.
