Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.1.LI.1 - Examine population growth and distribution in Ghana

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define population growth, population distribution and population density, and clearly distinguish between them using Ghanaian examples.
  • Interpret population data from the Ghana Statistical Service to describe the trend of Ghana’s population growth from 1960 to the present.
  • Explain the uneven pattern of population distribution in Ghana, identifying which regions are densely and sparsely populated and offering reasons for these patterns.
  • Calculate population density for given regions and compare densities across regions.
  • Present findings from group analysis of maps and data, demonstrating teamwork and respectful exchange of ideas with peers of all backgrounds and abilities.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Groupwork/collaborative learning:
- With the aid of pictures and videos, work in groups to explain population growth, distribution and density
- Distinguish between population growth, distribution and density. Learners should be able to manage their emotional reactions and behaviours using techniques such as mindfulness strategies, breathing, and self-talk.

Assessment (3.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Use available population data from Ghana Statistical Service, National Population Council and any other sources to facilitate your discussions.
- Maps of migration trends to aid discussion.
- Use pictures and videos of different settlement types and patterns for illustrations.
