SHS3 Geography · Semester 1, Week 15
Maps, Their Elements and Analyses
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.3 - Analyse the interrelationships between natural and cultural features on maps
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain how at least three natural features (relief, drainage, or vegetation) influence the location and pattern of cultural features (settlements, roads, farms) on a topographical map
- Determine whether two points on a topographical map are intervisible by drawing and interpreting a line of sight between them
- Calculate the gradient between any two points on a topographical map using the formula and express the result as a ratio
- Justify, using evidence from a map, why a settlement, road, or farm is situated where it is based on the natural features of the area
- Predict how changes to natural features (e.g., a new dam or deforestation) might affect cultural features in the mapped area

Talk for Learning: Through think-pair-share, determine whether two points on topographical maps are intervisible and calculate gradient between any two points. Learners should realise that they can accomplish their goals with hard work, persistence, and good strategies. Assessment (3.2.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Google Earth in 3D view (zoom to the area covered by the topographical map, so learners can see the natural and cultural features they are describing and analysing) - Topographical map (if possible, one covering your school locality)
