The Earth and Its Features
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.1 - Describe the development of river channels and associated landforms
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define river channel, erosion, transportation and deposition as key terms in river development.
- Describe the sequence of processes (erosion, transportation and deposition) that shape a river channel from source to mouth.
- Explain the formation of at least three erosional landforms (e.g., V-shaped valley, interlocking spurs, waterfall) and three depositional landforms (e.g., floodplain, delta, meander).
- Identify Ghanaian rivers (e.g., Volta, Pra, Ankobra, Densu) and describe a landform associated with at least one of them.
- Distinguish between landforms typical of the upper, middle and lower courses of a river using sketches or labelled diagrams.

Exploratory Learning: Prior to the lesson, individually, research on the formation of erosional and depositional landforms. Talk-for-Learning: Using questions and answer technique, explain the formation of erosional and depositional landforms of rivers. Consider learners with different learning needs. Learners should consider the emotions of individuals who struggle to express themselves. Geographic enquiry: Embark on a field trip to a nearby river or watch videos on river processes and landforms. Assessment (3.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Use videos, pictures, Google Earth App and other digital sources to view channels of major rivers and identify examples of river landforms
