Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.3 - Discuss the relationship between Western Modern Art from 1850 to 1950 and modern African art with reference to materials, imagery, and meanings.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Compare at least three pairs of Western Modern artworks and modern African artworks, identifying the materials used in each and noting similarities or differences.
- Analyse how imagery (subjects, symbols, and visual forms) in Western Modern Art from 1850 to 1950 appears in or influences modern African art, using specific examples discussed in class.
- Explain the shared and borrowed meanings in Western Modern and modern African artworks, with reference to cultural context, identity, and social commentary.
- Create a simple annotated visual comparison chart (manual or digital) pairing a Western Modern artwork with a modern African artwork, describing materials, imagery, and meaning for each pair.
- Present and defend their comparison in a small group discussion, using appropriate art vocabulary to describe and talk about modern art movements.
