SHS3 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 2
Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Systems
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.3.LI.2 - Present a summary of ground-based surveillance systems.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define ground-based surveillance systems and state their purpose in aerospace vehicle monitoring.
- Describe at least four types of ground-based surveillance systems, including primary surveillance radar, secondary surveillance radar, automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) ground stations, and multilateration systems.
- Explain the advantages and limitations of each ground-based surveillance system presented.
- Compare ground-based surveillance systems with the on-board surveillance systems studied in the previous week.
- Present a clear oral or written summary of ground-based surveillance systems, demonstrating understanding of how these systems work together to track aerospace vehicles.
