SHS3 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 1, Week 19
Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Systems
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.3.LI.2 - Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the different navigation technologies.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Compare at least four different navigation technologies used in aircraft and spacecraft, stating one advantage and one disadvantage of each.
- Justify the choice of a specific navigation technology for a given flight scenario, using at least two reasons based on its advantages and limitations.
- Evaluate the reliability of a handheld compass, navigation charts, GPS, and inertial navigation systems by ranking them for accuracy in different conditions.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-gender, mixed-ability groups to present a balanced view of one navigation technology, respecting diverse opinions during group discussions.
- Apply strategic reasoning to determine which navigation technology (or combination) is most suitable for a long-haul flight from Accra to London versus a short domestic flight from Accra to Kumasi.
