SHS3 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 1, Week 15

Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Systems

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.3.LI.2 - Illustrate the pros and cons of each aviation communication technology.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least three advantages and three limitations of VHF/HF radio communication in aviation scenarios.
  2. Compare and contrast two-way radio and mobile phone communication for short to medium range, and long range aviation use.
  3. Justify, with reasons, which communication technology is most suitable for a given aviation scenario (short, medium, or long range).
  4. Produce a labelled illustration (diagram or table) showing the pros and cons of at least four aviation communication technologies.
  5. Defend their choice of communication system in a group discussion, respecting the views of classmates with different opinions.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative Learning: By exploring the requirements for aviation communication in different scenarios (short to medium range, long range), students think, pair and share the merits and limitations of each communications technology.
- A two-way radio
- A mobile phone
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Canned tins with thread/wire
- Talking drums
Assessment (3.2.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
