SHS1 Agricultural Science · Semester 1, Week 8

Emerging Technologies in Agriculture.

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.1 - Grow vegetable and ornamental crops using the known procedures and technologies.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Identify the key steps in growing a selected vegetable crop (e.g., lettuce or spring onion) and an ornamental plant (e.g., marigold or croton) using one emerging technology method.
  • Prepare a growing medium using water, substrate (e.g., cocopeat, rice hull, or gravel), and a container suitable for the selected crop.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for planting seeds or seedlings in a substrate-based growing system, including spacing and watering.
  • Monitor and record the growth of the planted crop over time using a simple observation chart in their field notebooks.
  • Compare the procedure used in the substrate system with the traditional soil method and state at least one benefit of each.
