SHS2 Chemistry · Semester 2, Week 18
Organic Functional Groups
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.5 - Explain the structure, nomenclature, preparation, properties and uses of alkanoic acids as well as their characteristic test.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Generate the first six members of the alkanoic acid homologous series (methanoic to hexanoic acid) and state their molecular and structural formulas.
- Apply IUPAC rules to name alkanoic acids up to C6 and draw structures of their positional isomers.
- Write balanced chemical equations for the preparation of alkanoic acids from primary alkanols, alkanals, and alkyl benzenes.
- Account for the physical properties of alkanoic acids (solubility, boiling point, melting point, density, volatility) in terms of hydrogen bonding and molecular size.
- Describe and carry out characteristic tests for alkanoic acids, including their reaction with alkanols to form esters (which have a fruity smell), and state the uses of alkanoic acids in everyday life.

Collaborative Learning Approach: - Generate members of alkanoic acids (carboxylic acids) up to C6. - Apply IUPAC rules to name alkanoic acids up to C6 and their isomers. - Write chemical equations for the production of alkanoic acids (i.e., from primary alkanols, alkanals, alkyl benzene). - Discuss the biological way of producing ethanoic acid from acid fermentation. - Discuss the physical properties of alkanoic acids (solubility in water, boiling point, melting point, density, volatility). - Account for the acidity of alkanoic acids and state the factors that affect their acidity. Exploratory Learning: Plan and carry out simple test tube experiments or watch videos or use virtual laboratory to investigate the reactions of alkanoic acids with the following substances: Na, NaOH, NaHCO , Na CO , NH , ROH, LiAlH Experiential Learning: - Conduct an experiment to test for alkanoic acids through the reaction with alkanols to produce esters. - Talk about other ways of testing for the presence of alkanoic acids. Initiating Talk for Learning: - Describe some synthetic pathways of alkanoic acids. - Describe some uses of alkanoic acids (manufacture of synthetic flavouring, nylon, food preservatives, vinegar, terylene, brighteners).
