SHS2 Biology · Semester 1, Week 1

Biology as the Science of Life

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Describe the distinctive characteristics and life processes of some common simple living organisms (Rhizopus, Moss and Fern).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the indicator code 2.1.1.LI.1 and explain what is meant by a “simple living organism” in biological terms.
  2. Describe the distinctive structural characteristics of Rhizopus (bread mould), Moss, and Fern, using correct biological terms such as hyphae, rhizoids, sporophyte, and gametophyte.
  3. Outline the key life processes (nutrition, growth, reproduction, and response to the environment) of Rhizopus, Moss, and Fern.
  4. Distinguish between the three organisms by comparing their habitats, body structure, and methods of reproduction.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability, gender-responsive groups to observe specimens or images and present accurate observations to the class.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative Learning: in mixed-ability, gender-responsive and all-inclusive groups, learners observe characteristics and life processes of common simple living organisms from Relia, videos, textbooks, microscopes, etc., and discuss their observations; they learn to listen to their peers and express disagreements in a constructive manner.
Project-based Learning: learners in their groups write a report and present their findings on the key processes and characteristics common to the simple living organisms studied, developing healthy and respectful relationships with one another by this means.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * LCD projector * TV
- * Light microscope * Microscope slides and cover slips
- * Android phone. * Internet facility
- Computers/laptop
- Computer/mobile phone
- Appropriate textbooks
Assessment (2.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
