SHS2 Engineering · Semester 2, Week 8

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.3.LI.2 - Perform a walk-through energy audit of a facility and identify sources of energy wastage.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what an energy audit is and distinguish it from a general audit.
  2. Outline the step-by-step procedure for performing a walk-through energy audit of a facility.
  3. Identify common sources of energy wastage in electrical and thermal systems found in school facilities.
  4. Conduct a walk-through energy audit of a designated facility in the school and record findings systematically.
  5. Prepare and present a walk-through energy audit report, noting recommendations for improvement.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating Talk for Learning: In a moderated discussion, learners discuss what an audit (in general) is, its importance, and processes. From the general understanding, learners explain what an energy audit is.
Share with learners the procedure for performing a walk-through energy audit of a facility and how to prepare a report.
Problem-based, experiential and collaborative Learning: Learners grouped and tasked to perform a walk-through energy audit of a selected facility in their school, e.g. classroom, offices, dormitories, etc in their school. The groups present their report to the class for questions and observations.

Assessment (2.2.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
