SHS2 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 6
Health and Safety in Engineering Practice
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.4 - Explain control measures for various hazards.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define control measures and explain their purpose within the risk assessment process, recalling the five main categories of hazard control.
- Classify given hazards according to the appropriate control measure category (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment).
- Explain the hierarchy of controls and justify why certain control measures are preferred over others in given scenarios.
- Propose appropriate control measures for hazards commonly found in engineering workshops and Ghanaian workplaces, giving reasons for their choices.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of different control measures for a specific hazard and recommend the most suitable combination, considering cost, practicality, and worker safety.

Initiating Talk for Learning: Through questions and answers, learners mention hazards they know in pairs. Learners think and share views on control measures that can be adopted to overcome various hazards. Assessment (2.1.2.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector and laptop
