SHS2 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 2
Engineering in Society
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.2 - Explain the processes for systematic investigation.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- List the general processes involved in systematic investigation in the correct sequence.
- Construct a flowchart that illustrates the steps of systematic investigation for a given engineering problem.
- Explain the purpose of each step in the systematic investigation process using engineering examples.
- Apply the systematic investigation process to a real-world problem in a collaborative group setting.
- Justify the importance of order and iteration in systematic investigation when presenting group findings.

Managing Talk for Learning: In a moderated discussion, learners outline general processes for systematic investigation. Use flowcharts to illustrate the process and summarise their views. Building on what others say: The facilitator fine-tunes the processes outlined by learners by adding on. Collaborative Learning: Learners sit in groups, and each group is presented with a problem for the group to brainstorm and come up with a process to investigate it. Each group presents their process to the entire class for comments. Assessment (2.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
