Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.2 - Identify and validate quantitative data collection methods (Survey/Questionnaire, Interviews, Observation, Existing Data, and Probability) and use them to collect everyday-life data.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the five quantitative data collection methods (survey/questionnaire, interviews, observation, existing data, and probability) and state when each is most appropriate.
  2. Justify the choice of a particular quantitative data collection method for a given everyday-life data scenario, giving at least two reasons for the choice.
  3. Validate a sample questionnaire or interview guide by checking its features (clarity, relevance, length, bias) and suggest at least one improvement.
  4. Collect real quantitative data within the school community using one selected method, recording the data accurately.
  5. Present collected data in a simple frequency table (grouped or ungrouped) ready for analysis in later lessons.

Project-based learning, Group discussions, think-pair share activities.
Using project-based learning activities, students sample out numerous data they can collect and justify a particular data collection method(s) that is appropriate for collecting that quantitative data.
Example: i. Experiential Learning: Using convenient groups, students research and select an existing questionnaire, interview guide, observation guide, etc., then discuss its features, validate it usefulness and collect quantitative data with it in the classroom or within the school community.
ii. Experiential Learning: Using convenient groups/pairs, design a mini project where they choose a data collection method of choice and collect real quantitative data with it.
