Learning Objectives

Indicator: B9.3.1.1.2 - Explain the concept of respiration and show how the respiratory and circulatory systems complement each other.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. define respiration as a chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose using oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water as waste products.
  2. write the word equation for respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy.
  3. distinguish between breathing (the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs) and respiration (the chemical reaction inside cells).
  4. trace the pathway of oxygen from the air into the blood and then to body cells, and trace the pathway of carbon dioxide from cells back to the lungs.
  5. explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to supply oxygen to cells and remove carbon dioxide from them.
