E.g1. Recognise that for any three numbers a, b and c; i. a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c or a + (b + c) = (a + c) + b i.e. 15 + (6 + 9) = (15 + 6) + 9 = 30 ii. (a × b) × c = a × (b × c) i.e. (12 × 5) × 4 = 12 × (5 × 4) = 240
