JHS2 Career Technology · Term 3, Week 2
Designing
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.5.2.1.5 - Make artefact using resistant materials
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- identify and select the appropriate resistant materials, tools and manufacturing processes for making a chosen artefact, giving reasons for their choices.
- organise the working environment to observe health and safety rules before and during the making process.
- follow, in sequence, the steps of making an artefact from resistant materials using the working drawings and cutting list developed in earlier lessons.
- apply suitable finishing materials to the completed artefact and explain why the chosen finish is appropriate.
Building on the design brief, research, specifications and generated ideas from earlier weeks, this lesson moves learners from paper to production. Learners will physically make a simple wooden artefact, such as a hanging key holder, a phone stand or a small book rack, using resistant materials. The lesson prioritises safe workshop practice, accurate measurement and orderly sequence of operations.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Study the design folios with reference to the design, working drawings and cutting list developed in communication design. 2. Identify the materials, tools and manufacturing processes involved, and check the conditions suitable for working. 3. Organise the working environment to ensure health and safety during the making of the artefact. 4. Undertake in sequence the making of the artefact using the appropriate materials, tools and processes suitable for the design. 5. Select the appropriate finishing materials and apply on artefact
