Physical Fitness

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.2.1.1 - Participate in internationally benchmarked fitness indicators (e.g., cardiorespiratory strength and endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and balance indicators.) for personal fitness development, decision-making and goal setting

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the four internationally benchmarked fitness indicators: cardiorespiratory strength and endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and balance.
  2. Perform the push-up test, sit-up test, sit-and-reach test, and 12-minute run/walk at their own ability level and record their results accurately.
  3. Identify which fitness indicator each test measures and explain why that measurement matters for personal health.
  4. Record personal performance estimates in a self-journal and set one simple, achievable fitness goal based on their results.
  5. Make a personal decision about which fitness component they need to improve most, based on evidence from their recorded results.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

1. Perform push-ups to determine level of strength in the arms.
2. Perform sit and reach to determine level of flexibility in the lower back.
3. Perform sit-ups to determine level of strength in the abdominal region.
4. Perform a 12-minute run/walk to determine level of cardiorespiratory strength and endurance.
5. Record estimate of duration/measure of performance in your self-journal as your effort to increase involvement in physical activity.
Note: These activities are performed at the individual learner's own ability level and not against any set standard or benchmark.
