Variables and Equations

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.3.1.3 - Model linear equations, then write mathematical expressions and describe the process of solving the equation using algebraic tiles.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Represent a given linear equation of the form x + a = b using algebraic tiles, showing the variable tile and unit tiles correctly.
  2. Write the mathematical expression that corresponds to a given tile model of a linear equation.
  3. Describe orally and in writing the steps for solving a linear equation using algebraic tiles, including isolating the variable tile.
  4. Model and solve at least two linear equations with integer solutions using algebraic tiles, recording each step symbolically.
  5. Justify why the same operation must be performed on both sides of the equation when solving with tiles.
