JHS1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 6

Algebraic Expressions

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.2.1.3 - Perform multiplication and division of algebraic expressions with rational coefficients.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Multiply algebraic expressions with rational coefficients, including terms with powers (e.g., 4p × 8p², 5xy² × 4x⁴y³).
  2. Multiply three or more algebraic terms together, including negative coefficients (e.g., -2a × 4c × 5b).
  3. Write and simplify algebraic expressions for the area of rectangles and squares given their dimensions.
  4. Divide algebraic expressions with rational coefficients, simplifying the numerical and variable parts separately (e.g., 12x³y² ÷ 16xy⁴).
  5. Divide algebraic expressions where the denominator is a product of terms, simplifying fully (e.g., -30abc ÷ 6ab³c⁻²).
