JHS1 Mathematics · Term 2, Week 1
Number: Ratios and Proportion
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.1.4.1.2 - Use the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a unit rate as a comparison of two different quantities where the second quantity is reduced to 1 unit, stated as a fraction a/b where b is not zero.
- Convert a given ratio a:b into a unit rate a/b using division.
- Use rate language correctly, such as “per”, “for each”, and “for every”, to describe ratio relationships in real-life situations.
- Calculate the cost or quantity of items using a given unit rate in simple problem-solving tasks.
- Distinguish between situations that describe a unit rate and those that describe a simple ratio between like quantities.

Term 2, Week 1
(Week 13 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.
- Source document note
-
The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:
- indicator text - p.24: the document sets the unit rate as a stacked fraction a over b, which flattens to 'a associated with a ratio a:b b'; read 'the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b, with b not equal to 0'

E.g.1 Write given ratios as unit rate a . b i. This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3 4 cups of flour for each cup of sugar. ii. Aisha polishes 8 square yards of floor tiles every 7 minutes, so there are 8 square yards per minute. 7 E.g.2 Work out rates and use them in solving problems. i. If 2 litres of coca cola cost GH₵18, find the cost of (a) 1. 5 litres (b) 3 litres (c) 7 litres E.g.3 Use tables/diagrams to explain the concept of rate that compares two different quantities measured in different units. i. The table shows the weight and cost of meat at Salaga Market. If 3kg of meat costs GH₵ 60, use the information to complete the table.
Meat (kg) 2 3 5 12 Cost (GH₵) 60
