B6 Science · Term 1, Week 12

Life Cycles of Organisms

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.2.2.1.1 - Know the materials needed for the survival of plants in the environment (water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, sunlight)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Name at least four materials that plants need to survive in their environment (water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and sunlight).
  2. Describe the source of each essential material (for example, where water comes from, where sunlight comes from, and how carbon dioxide and oxygen get into the plant).
  3. Draw and label a simple annotated diagram showing how water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and sunlight enter a plant.
  4. Conduct a simple experiment to demonstrate the effect of water on plant survival and record their observations accurately.
  5. State at least one specific function of each essential material (water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and sunlight) in the survival of plants.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Review previous lesson on composition and uses of air.
- Prior to the lesson, learners investigate the materials required for plant survival.
- Learners present their findings on the materials required for plant survival.
- Using annotated diagrams, learners show sources and point of entry of the essential materials into the plants.
- Learners are guided to conduct an experiment to show the effect of water on plants' survival.
- Learners are assigned to find out the specific functions of oxygen, carbon dioxide, sunlight and water in the survival of plants.
