B6 Science · Term 1, Week 7

Earth Science

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.2.1.2.1 - Explain how rain falls from clouds

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the processes of evaporation, condensation, dew point, and precipitation in their own words.
  2. Explain the role of tiny dust or smoke particles in the formation of raindrops within a cloud.
  3. Demonstrate how gravity causes water droplets to fall from clouds as rain.
  4. Construct a simple model or diagram showing how raindrops form and fall from the high parts of a cloud.
  5. State reasons why not all clouds produce rainfall.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Review formation of clouds with learners.
- Lead learners to explain the terms: "evaporation, condensation, dew point, ice, cloud, gravity and precipitation".
- Learners, in an activity, design a model showing the formation of raindrops around tiny spots of dust or smoke and falling from high parts of a cloud.
- Explain that not all clouds result in rainfall.
