Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.3.1.1.2 - Construct rectangular and triangular prisms from their nets.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what a net of a prism is and identify the faces, bases, and edges that appear on a net.
  2. Draw an accurate net of a rectangular prism (including a cube as a special case) with correct dimensions and tabs for gluing.
  3. Draw an accurate net of a triangular prism with correct dimensions and tabs for gluing.
  4. Cut out, fold, and assemble rectangular and triangular prisms from their nets, gluing tabs inside to hold the shape together.
  5. Justify that a given net correctly forms a prism by checking that all faces are present and fold correctly, explaining their reasoning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

E.g. 1 Give the learners rectangular and triangular prisms made from cardboard by yourself (or cardboard packing cases from shops) to open and examine their nets
E.g. 2 Give the learners some cardboard or manila card to draw a net of a square prism whose cross section is a square with sides 10cm by 10cm and height 10cm. After drawing add tabs so that it can be folded so that the tabs are glued inside

E.g. 3 Give the learners some cardboard or manila card to draw a net of a rectangular prism whose cross section is a square with sides 10cm by 10cm and height 15cm. After drawing add tabs so that it can be folded so that the tabs are glued inside
E.g. 4 Give the learners some cardboard or manila card to draw a net of a triangular prism whose cross section is an equilateral triangle with side 10cm and height 10 cm. After drawing add tabs so that it can be folded so that the tabs are glued inside
