B5 Science · Term 2, Week 9

Sources and Forms of Energy

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.4.1.1.1 - Explain how energy is transformed from one form to another

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define energy transformation as the change of energy from one form into another.
  2. Identify the forms of energy involved when using common devices such as a torch, radio, television, bell, and gong-gong.
  3. Explain, with examples, how energy is transformed in everyday activities within the school and community.
  4. Draw and interpret a simple flow chart showing how energy from the sun is transformed into energy for walking.
  5. Work in groups to observe and report on energy transformations found in the school environment.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Explore learners' previous knowledge on the forms of energy (e.g. Electrical, heat, light, sound).
- Use some common devices (e.g. torch, radio, television, etc.) to demonstrate transformation of energy.
- Learners discuss energy transformations that take place in the school, e.g. ringing of bell, beating of gong-gong, drumming, etc.
- In groups, learner's identity other forms of energy transformations in the school community and present their findings for discussion in the class.
- Learners design a flow chart to explain how energy from the sun is transformed into energy for walking.
