Indicator: B5.2.1.1.1
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define rotation and axis in their own words using a ball or globe as reference.
- Demonstrate how the Earth’s rotation on its axis causes day and night using a torch, globe or polystyrene ball and ice-cream stick.
- Explain, in sequence, why one part of the Earth experiences daylight while another part experiences night.
- Draw and label a simple diagram showing the Earth, its axis, and the direction of sunlight to represent day and night.
- Relate the recurrent cycle of day and night to their daily activities, such as waking up, going to school, and sleeping.

- Assemble materials such as polystyrene (plastic) balls, football, ice-cream stick, torch, pen and globe. - Learners are assisted to understand the terms, rotation and axis using a ball. - Explain how the motion of the earth causes day and night, with the aid of a globe. - Learners observe a demonstration of day and night, using appropriate materials, e.g. globe of the earth, blu tac, and lamp without shade and a dark room. - Learners, in their groups, demonstrate the formation of day and night using, polystyrene balls, ice-cream stick, torch, pen and globe. - Learners explain how day and night come about and draw diagrams to represent their work.
