B5 Science · Term 1, Week 2
Living and Non-living Things
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.1.1.2.1 - Compare the differences among things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Sort given specimens accurately into three groups: things that are alive, things that were once alive (dead), and things that have never been alive.
- State at least three observable differences between living things, dead things, and things that have never been alive.
- Explain why a human being (the learner) is classified as a living thing, using evidence from the life processes they learnt in Week 1.
- Justify their classification of at least two unfamiliar specimens by pointing to specific features they observed.
- Use simple comparison statements (for example, “A stone is different from a dead leaf because…”) to describe the differences among the three groups.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
- Assemble living things (e.g. plants, insects, etc.), non-living things (e.g. firewood, pencils, paper, etc.) and things that have never lived (rocks, soil, water, etc.) for class activities. NB: Wear protectives when gathering specimen. - Learners observe and comment on the samples. - Learners, in an activity, classify the provided specimen as (1) Things that are alive (2) Once alive or (3) Never been alive. Learners are guided to compare the differences among things that are alive, once alive or never been alive. - Learners explain why they (learners) are classified as living things.
