B1 Mathematics · Term 3, Week 8

Measurement - Length, Mass and Capacity

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.3.3.1.1 - Develop an understanding of measuring as a process of comparing pairs of items using words such as smaller, longer, thinner, heavier, bigger etc.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Compare two objects placed side by side and state which one is taller, longer, or bigger using the correct comparison words.
  2. Hold two objects, one in each hand, and determine which one is heavier or lighter, justifying their answer.
  3. Use the words smaller, longer, thinner, heavier, and bigger correctly when describing the relationship between pairs of everyday objects.
  4. Work in pairs to sort a collection of objects into groups based on a given comparison word (for example, sorting by length or size).
  5. Explain to a friend why one object is thicker or thinner than another, using simple reasons from their observation.
