Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.1.2.1.1 - Demonstrate understanding of addition as joining and finding how many altogether and subtraction as separating and finding how many left; numbers 0 to 20

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Act out a given oral story problem and demonstrate with counters or fingers whether the situation involves joining (addition) or separating (subtraction).
Find how many altogether in a joining story problem within 20, using objects or counting on.
Find how many are left in a separating story problem within 20, using objects or counting back.
Say whether a given story problem is addition or subtraction and explain why, using words like “join”, “add”, “separate”, “take away”, “altogether” and “left”.
Create their own simple addition or subtraction story problem within 20 and act it out for a partner.
