Welding Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.3 - Perform basic cutting and bending operations in sheet metal fabrication

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Select the appropriate sheet metal specification (gauge, thickness, and type) for a given fabrication task, justifying their choice with reference to the material’s properties and the intended use of the article.
  2. Mark out sheet metal accurately to shape using scribers, rules, try squares, and dividers, following a given dimensioned sketch.
  3. Perform basic cutting operations on sheet metal using hand tools (e.g., tin snips, hand shears) and machine tools (e.g., guillotine, bench shears), observing all safety precautions.
  4. Perform basic bending operations on sheet metal using hand tools (e.g., folding bars, mallets) and machine tools (e.g., box and pan brake, bending machine) to produce articles such as trays, brackets, or boxes with accurate angles and dimensions.
  5. Demonstrate safe workshop practices throughout all cutting and bending operations, including correct tool handling, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and proper housekeeping.

The depth-of-knowledge for this indicator is Level 3 (Strategic reasoning). Learning activities therefore require learners to plan, justify, and evaluate their approach to fabrication tasks, not merely repeat steps mechanically.
