SHS1 Applied Technology · Semester 2, Week 9

Welding Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.2.LI.2 - Describe various tools and equipment for electric arc welding

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least eight tools and equipment used in electric arc welding and state the function of each.
  2. Describe the complete electric arc welding setup, including the power source, cables, electrode holder, and workpiece connections.
  3. Explain the role of protective equipment (PPE) in electric arc welding and why each item is essential for safety.
  4. Classify electrodes according to their types and coatings, and match each type to its common application.
  5. Demonstrate through a group presentation the correct sequence of setting up electric arc welding equipment safely.

This lesson builds directly on the gas welding tools and equipment learners studied in Week 8. The focus here is specifically on the electric arc welding process and its tools. Applications of these tools will be explored in Week 10, and comparisons with gas welding will come in Week 11, so this lesson stays within the scope of describing tools and equipment.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Learner's educational visit to local welding workshop or school workshop where the set up and the use of tools and equipment are explained to them fairly. Guide learners to make appropriate reference to the equipment of the electric arc welding using relevant resources. Learners embark on an educational visit to a local electric arc welding workshop or school workshop.

Assessment (1.4.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
