SHS2 Physics · Semester 1, Week 19

Waves

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.4 - Apply the concept of resonance in the determination of speed of sound in air.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define resonance and explain the conditions required for resonance to occur in a resonance tube.
  2. Describe the procedure for determining the speed of sound in air using a resonance tube apparatus.
  3. Apply the resonance tube equations (v = 4fL₁ and v = 2f(L₂ - L₁)) to calculate the speed of sound in air.
  4. Compare the experimentally determined value of the speed of sound with the accepted value of approximately 343 m/s and account for any differences.
  5. Identify real-life examples of resonance and explain how understanding resonance helps in practical situations.
