Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.2.LI.2 - Deduce the laws of reflection.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the two laws of reflection in their own words after performing a guided experiment with plane mirrors and optical pins.
- Deduce the laws of reflection from experimental observations of the angle of incidence and angle of reflection for several rays.
- Verify, using a protractor, that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection for at least three different incident angles.
- Construct ray diagrams showing the incident ray, reflected ray, and normal, and correctly identify all three components.
- Explain, using experimental evidence, why the incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie in the same plane.

Semester 1, Week 17
(Week 17 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Experiential learning: - With the materials provided guide learners to establish the laws of reflection using the images formed by the mirror. - Let learners brainstorm in groups of mixed abilities to establish the link between reflection and image formation. - Guide learners to state the laws of reflection. Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Assessment (1.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Plane mirror strip with holder, - Drawing boards, - Optical pins, - A4 sheets, - Ruler, - Protractor, - Thumb tugs/drawing pins
