Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.1 - Identify the types and features of lenses.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a lens and distinguish between the two main types: concave (diverging) and convex (converging) lenses, citing at least one everyday example of each.
- Identify and label the key features of a lens: pole, principal axis, optical centre, principal focus, and focal length, using a clearly drawn diagram.
- Explain the relationship between the focal length, the principal focus, and the curvature of a lens, stating how these features determine whether a lens converges or diverges light.
- Use ICT tools (internet, videos, or virtual labs) to research and share accurate information about lens features, presenting findings clearly to a peer group.
- Classify a range of real-world optical devices (spectacles, magnifying glass, camera, projector) according to the type of lens they contain, with supporting reasoning.

Collaborative learning: Using the internet/reference books, let learners research to find the meaning of the following terms concave lens, convex lens, pole, principal focus, principal/central axis, focal length, and optical centre before watching a video. Encourage diverse perspectives and contributions. Assessment (3.2.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
