Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.2 - Evaluate the origins and nature of the Cold War and assess its impact on the world today

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define the Cold War and distinguish it from “hot” wars such as the First and Second World Wars studied in Week 6
  • Explain at least three causes of the Cold War, including ideological differences, nuclear rivalry, and the division of Europe after 1945
  • Describe the main stages of the Cold War, from its origins after 1945 to its end in 1991, citing key events such as the Berlin Blockade, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the fall of the Berlin Wall
  • Assess at least three ways the Cold War continues to shape the world today, including nuclear proliferation, proxy conflicts, and cyberwarfare
  • Evaluate the impact of the Cold War on Africa, using specific examples such as the Non-Aligned Movement and Cold War-era conflicts on the continent
