Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.6.3.1 - Deduce meaning of words from the word class they belong to and how they relate to one another (synonyms and antonyms).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the word class (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) of given words from a short passage and explain how the word class helps to reveal meaning.
  2. Identify synonyms and antonyms of target words from a given text.
  3. Deduce the contextual meaning of unfamiliar words by using their word class and their relationship with other words (synonyms and antonyms) in the sentence.
  4. Use target words, their synonyms and antonyms correctly in their own sentences.
  5. Participate in a vocabulary game, such as the Synonym/Antonym Tree game, to reinforce understanding of word relationships.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Teach meaning of keywords in a text by using them in sentences.
- In groups of six have learners bring out the contextual meaning of the words using synonyms and antonyms.
- Have learners use these words in their own sentences.
- Have them present their work to the class for feedback.
- Have learners play vocabulary games, e.g. The Synonym/Antonym Tree game.
